Rey Skywalker will be all grown up when Daisy Ridley reprises the role of this generationâs Star Wars Jedi heroine. Ridley told Empire Magazine sheâs âcoming in a bit more eyes wide openâ to her new film, and added âI suppose I feel more like Iâm owning it. I suppose I owned it the first time. Basically, Iâm an adult now.â
The Lucasfilm feature will be a new story centering on Rey and the New Jedi Order directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Ridleyâs excitement is due in part to the space sheâs had from the last trilogy and the online discourseâwhich she feels more prepared to handle, âI certainly did not feel like an adult at the time. Obviously, personally, things have changed, and professionally, Iâve had lots of other experiences, and so I definitely feel like itâs a different thing this time,â she told the magazine.
She continued reflecting on the good. âThereâs just a lot of joy with me and these films,â she said, explaining that it wasnât a difficult decision to return, âHonestly, if I wasnât excited, I wouldnât have done it. It feels like a great thing to be a part of.â Even though thereâs no script yet for Reyâs next chapter, Ridley remains âcurious about it all.â That said, âI didnât say yes right away; Kathy [Kennedy] was like, âTake as long as you need.ââ
Thankfully whatever was discussed with the Lucasfilm brain trust and Obaid-Chinoy was enough to win her over. âWhy wouldnât I [do it]? Yes, [Star Wars movies] have been divisive, but also they bring a lot of love and joy to a lot of people. It feels pretty amazing to be able to continue a character–like, can I even remember how to play her? Itâs an interesting challenge as an actor to come back to something and try to figure out whatâs changed for me and whatâs changed for her.â
Rey Skywalker will return to lead the New Jedi Order in the upcoming Lucasfilm release in the near future.
